Attract Gen Z talent into your business on a spiritual wellness level: the next generation of heart-based leadership

Generation Z, commonly defined as those born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, is exhibiting an inherent interest and acceptance of spirituality. This phenomenon is not surprising given the many challenges faced by this generation, including the global pandemic, climate change, political polarisation, and social injustice. These issues have left many feeling disconnected and searching for meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging from something greater and beyond.

One reason for this growing interest in spirituality is the decline of traditional religious institutions. Many Gen Zers grew up in households that were less religious than those of previous generations, and as a result they may be seeking alternative forms of spiritual expression. Additionally, they are more likely to identify as spiritual rather than religious, preferring a personalised and flexible approach to spirituality that fits their unique needs and beliefs. Growing up in a globalised society in which building personal brands has taken hold for the first time, authenticity and personalisation are of prime importance to this cohort. Fitting into the crowd is not their main objective, rather finding more niche groups of common interest at a global level and being proud of their confidence in being different or individual.

Moreover, Gen Zers were born into a globalised world, and the internet, from which different forms of spirituality, including Eastern practices such as meditation and yoga were mainstream. Also being born into a deeper understanding of mental health and wellness, they instinctively get the practical benefits of these practices, such as stress reduction, improved mental health, and a greater sense of mindfulness and self-awareness. Spirituality can also provide a sense of community and social connection , which is especially important given the isolation many have experienced due to the pandemic.

In addition to the personal benefits of spirituality, Gen Zers are also drawn to its potential to effect positive change in the world. Many see spirituality as a means of promoting social justice, environmental sustainability, and a more compassionate and inclusive society. By connecting to something greater than themselves, they can find purpose and motivation to make a positive impact on the world.

Gen Z's interest in spirituality reflects a growing trend in connection, meaning, and purpose in an increasingly complex and challenging world. By embracing spirituality, they can find inner strength, resilience, and a sense of community that enables them to face the future with hope and optimism. These leaders of tomorrow will be resilient as ever, but above all they will have heart. They were after all the first generation to be born into an understanding of their role in fixing the global problems, especially at an environmental level, created by their predecessors.

Tomorrow's Gen Z leaders will therefore have a strong sense of heart, or emotional intelligence, to engage with people and succeed in an ever-changing and complex world. In addition to traditional leadership skills such as strategic thinking and problem-solving, leaders of the future must be able to connect with and inspire their teams, navigate difficult conversations, and foster a culture of empathy and inclusivity. The ability to lead with heart will be essential in creating a workplace culture that promotes innovation, collaboration, creativity and success.

Connecting with our future leaders on a heart level, with empathy and support is something we all need to embrace. Step into their shoes and into their world!
