Why Fit In When You Can Go Further? the power of pushing the ceiling

One of the quietest traps in adult life is the ceiling created by the group you’re standing in.

I see it clearly living in East London, surrounded by successful professionals who’ve done well. Good jobs. Nice homes. Upgrades in progress. On the surface, it looks like growth. But underneath, the room sets the limit.

When everyone around you is doing “well” proximity shapes perception. It’s easy to stop asking how far you can go and start asking where you fit in.

I recognise this pattern because I’ve pushed through ceilings my whole life.

I grew up in the hood, where the ceiling was obvious. You could see exactly how far people went — and where they stopped. Leaving at eighteen was my first act of alchemy. Not a move, a transformation. I stepped out of one limit and into another — cleaner, quieter, better dressed, but still a ceiling. The symbols change with class, but the psychology doesn’t.

That’s the trick: ceilings don’t disappear, they just change form.

In the hood, it was:

  • who stayed

  • who left

  • who got pulled back

  • who got labelled “different” or ‘getting above herself’ or ‘the black sheep'‘

In Zone 3, it’s:

  • extensions

  • schools

  • renovations

  • lifestyle upgrades

  • who’s making a bad decision when they choose a different area or send their kid to a different school

Same mechanism.
Different symbols.

Zone 3 has its own version. Polite. Professional. Respectable. But still a container. And if you stay long enough, you inherit it, and so do your kids. Maybe even your kids kids.

Alchemy starts when you notice the container.

When you name it, it loses power. When you feel the restlessness, that’s heat. That’s the signal the vessel is too small for who you’re becoming.

I’ve always been a maverick. I don’t want to win the game being played — I want to change the substance of the game itself. I’m not interested in comparison. I’m interested in expansion.

So if your life looks good but feels tight, trust that. It’s not going to hold the next version of you.

It’s not dissatisfaction.
It’s evolution.

And if you stay inside a ceiling you never meet the version of yourself that was waiting for growth and evolution.
