Demystifying Crystals: a practical approach to the use of minerals in your healing process

There is some controversy about the magical properties of crystals, but there is no doubt that they emit vibrations. Each crystal vibrates at a slightly different frequency, depending on its molecular structure.

One of my favourite places in London is The Minerals Room at The Natural History Museum where you can step back in time to see the Museum as it was in 1881 with its original oak display cabinets in the Minerals gallery. If you ever questioned the healing energetic vibration of crystals before, then I challenge you to sit in this room for as long as you can and measure how your mood changes. The only caveat : as long as it’s pretty quiet and you’re not inundated with a school trip! I am assuming your energetic balance will restore and ground you into a more relaxed or peacefully aware state.

Crystals have been used for thousands of years by different cultures around the world. These beautiful stones are believed to have powerful energy and healing properties that can help people achieve balance, clarity, and harmony in their lives. Let’s explore the history of crystals, evidence of their value, and how people can benefit from using them in their daily lives.

The use of crystals dates back to ancient civilisations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. They used them in various ways, including jewellery, talismans, and amulets. In some cultures, crystals were thought to possess magical powers. During the Middle Ages used in alchemy, and in the 16th century, Paracelsus, a Swiss physician and alchemist, believed that crystals could cure diseases and promote healing, therefore popularising them.

Eastern religious cultures have long embraced the use of gemstones and crystals for various purposes. In practices like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, gemstones are believed to possess healing properties because of their energetic vibrations that can restore balance, promote spiritual growth, and enhance overall well-being. In Hindu and Sikh traditions, gemstones hold significant symbolism and are often worn in rings. Gemstones are believed to represent planetary energies and can be used to enhance specific aspects of one's life. For example, wearing a ruby may symbolise and embody strength and courage, while a pearl may represent and foster purity and tranquility.

In the 20th century, the use of crystals became a big part of the New Age movement, which emphasised spirituality, personal growth, and alternative healing methods. Today, crystals are widely used by people all over the world as we become more accustomed to working with energy and educating ourselves on the power of connectedness to all things, and consciousness. The benefits and beauty of crystals have become more about forming a personal connection to our goals. After all we are gaining clarity on the importance of intention. If a crystal amulet is a constant reminder of that intention it supports us in manifesting due to the mind-body connection. ‘What we think, we become’ Buddha.

It is widely accepted in the holistic community that people report positive experiences after working with stones and crystals. In holistic studies we experience that they have an impact on the body's energy fields, which promotes healing at an emotional and physical level One study published in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that crystal therapy was effective in reducing pain and anxiety in cancer patients. Another study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that crystal therapy helped improve the mood and well-being of patients with fibromyalgia. Most people find that using crystals can help them feel more grounded, centred, and relaxed.

There are many ways to use crystals, and the best method depends on the individual's preferences and intentions. I recommend laying a crystal on one or more of the chakras during meditation. Or placing larger crystals in a room to promote positive energy and balance.

Each crystal has unique properties and meaning so choose the crystal that resonates with your intentions. With so many different crystals to choose from, experienced experts can find the perfect stones and crystals to support intentions and enhance well-being. Remember - always purchase ethically sourced crystals and be conscious of the fact they have been removed from the earth; gifts from our great mother Gaia.

A recommended book on the subject is Love Is In The Earth: A Kaleidoscope Of Crystals, authored by Melody, who is one of the world’s leading crystal healers.

NB Never leave small crystals and stones with unaccompanied children due to choking hazard. Innerness recommends buying one larger crystal versus many small ones to avoid this risk.
